My Teacher renewal Bookshelf

Books are one way I renew my practice. Here are some of my favorites.

flourish by Martin E.P. Seligman

This is the book that changed how I think about stress. Prior to reading this book, my focus was on managing my precious minutes and decreasing my stress. This book helped me see that less stress is NOT exactly what I was after. I wanted to flourish in my life and work. I wanted to feel joyful and engaged!

This book has the super simple framework for wellbeing as well as some interesting stories and studies. According to Seligman, wellbeing is comprised of a few things: positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, achievement, and health. It’s easy to remember with the acronym PERMAH. In this book, Seligman offers a few easy ways to bring more PERMAH into our lives.

Cultivating Teacher Renewal by Barbara Larrivee

Yes! This is the book you have been waiting for on teacher renewal. Larrivee helped me fully understand the myriad of reasons why teaching is one of the most stressful professions and how to thrive in this profession. Larrivee talks about what burnout is and why it occurs so often. Burnout happens when we use up all our internal resources and feel like we have nothing left to give. It’s when you…just…can’t….even.

Renewal happens when we replenish our resources. Larrivee offers so many suggestion and ideas that are backed by research. It’s like opening a treasure chest of teacher renewal techniques to make you stress hardy! My favorite is her approach to classroom management that can RENEW our spirits instead of burning us out.

Its filled with lots of very realistic ways to work on your wellbeing…and things for your team as well! I’ve used some of their strategies at teacher meetings with great success!
